Happy birthday goats!
In the upper echelon of the zodiac, we arrive at Capricorn. As the last earth sign in the wheel, Capricorn represents culmination of all the earthly progress we’ve made since the spring equinox. It’s time to review everything we have been working towards this year, make modifications, and then forge ahead with a plan that is even more clear and focused.
Capricorn season coincides with all kinds of holidays celebrated around the world. The most emblematic one is the Winter Solstice. This is Capricorn’s debut, after all. Think about what it means, the fact that Capricorn arrives on the darkest night of the year. This is not the darkness of Scorpio, not the darkness of autumn cometh or Halloween. This darkness is not seductive or intimidating, but rather serious. Is it really surprising that Capricorns tend to be so self-critical when we consider the time of the year in which they are born? The earth goes to sleep; light slips through our fingers; the cold sets in.
Capricorn is associated with aspects of life like work and business, but the most important work that Capricorn performs is almost entirely ignored: bringing the light back. Capricorn is so driven that he doesn’t even absorb this light himself – he just moils away with impressive force, building and fortifying cosmic castles with cosmic boulders. This task, bringing the light back increment by increment, keeps the goat very busy. The winter solstice officially takes place at 2:01am PDT on Dec 21. Take a moment to look up at the sky and welcome the light back. Thank you Capricorns! Light up the solstice with Capricorn Yoga. In meditation, focus on the root chakra.
Capricorns, we need to talk about the ridiculously high expectations and standards you have for yourselves. My advice is simple: relax. Let it flow. Free yourself from your internal binds.
The sea-goat moves at one of two speeds: insanity or total stillness. If you, like me, have lots of earth energy in your chart, this cycle signals hibernation. Overcoming inertia feels pretty impossible at this time of year. Some things that are important: sleep. Go to bed early, unless you want to sleep through this entire cycle. Don’t eat too late at night. Spend time in the sun. If you are feeling overwhelmed or depressed, try incorporating citrus, cinnamon, hot chilies or other pitta–inducing foods into your diet. These will help keep your energy elevated. Take hot baths. Stay away from screens, TV, etc. Pick up a book instead. All creative work encouraged per usual, but I know how hard it is to create when you’re not feeling inspired.
This Capricorn season is going to be extremely busy (just like the goat!): for starters, the Winter Solstice coincides with the quarter moon in Aries + a historic conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius. This is the closest conjunction of these planets since 1623. Everything about this conjunction is life-affirming, invigorating, and confidence-inducing. It’s time to move forward with new ideas, new circumstances, new plans. We have so much energy coming in that we just need to be realistic about how much we can handle; what we have already established in our lives will be challenged by this influx. Focus on what has already been established and use this as a launch pad for new progressive trajectories.
This conjunction is a divine marriage between freedom (Jupiter) and structure (Saturn). The great news is that we’ll have so many opportunities that we get to choose what most excites and fulfills us. We can bring more light and flexibility to the stodgy, responsible nature of Saturn/Capricorn. For example, you might take a break from work, receive some much-needed support (especially from older, wiser mentors), or perhaps experience an internal shift in regards to what it means to be accountable, or how to move beyond insecurities. See your flaws and fears as invaluable teachers.
If you’ve been thinking about working for yourself, this is the perfect time to start. Call in more liberation and less restrictions. We can be dependable and independent; realistic and optimistic. We can be strong without being rigid. This is a very special time when new understanding allows us to let go of old opinions or perspectives which no longer serve us. What was once unacceptable or unthinkable we now see in a new, positive light. We are exploring what we are really capable of.
On Dec 27, the sun trines Uranus Retrograde in Taurus. This is such a jolly, extroverted influence. Lastly on Jan 14, the sun meets up with Pluto in Capricorn for a conjunction. (This is also the last day of Uranus Retrograde, woohoo). A word of warning: this conjunction is very intense on an emotional level. Watch for arguments and power/control struggles.
