Planets in retrograde are not moving backwards – it is an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.
Jupiter turns retrograde for 4 months each year. Jupiter Retrograde is when we go back and revisit lessons of a spiritual or philosophical nature. This is a journey of personal, inward growth. Normally Jupiter operates on a larger scale, guiding the arc of shared human destiny. During the retrograde, we seek the highest version of ourselves. This year Jupiter Retrograde falls in the constellation of air sign Gemini, where Jupiter has been spinning since late May 2024.
So far Jupiter in Gemini hasn’t been as magical as I thought it was going to be. But then again, when I think back 12 years ago to the last time Jupiter transited Gemini, I remember the first half being pretty fucking rough. It didn’t start to feel groovy until near the end.
Here´s what I do know: Jupiter in Gemini activates the mind, creativity, and intellect. We are feeling inspired now, as well as inspired to share what we are creating. We´re brainstorming, connecting, and moving around faster than fairies in the moonlight.
There is a certain exhaustion that creeps in with Gemini due to all the movement. The movement may not necessarily be physical, but the mind is certainly overactive here. The retrograde period will help us to integrate all of this motion. We need to pause, breathe, and organize our thoughts.
It is great to have ideas and aspirations, but without execution, that’s all they remain. Jupiter Retrograde in Gemini is an essential part of the execution process. This is how we make manifest our ideas. All the doors and windows are flung open now, but chaotically, flying about in the wind. We need the slowness of the retrograde to make sense of Gemini’s nonstop movement and fascination with all things new.
Jupiter Retrograde in Gemini will be so helpful when it comes to focusing on what we are creating. The mind won’t feel so scattered now. Gemini’s trademark curiosity and ardent desire to learn will flow now in a more constant air stream. People and connections we may have already made since May will now circle back and fall into place, like birds dropping into formation from the clouds.
I can already feel you relaxing. That’s right, we have time now to sit down and work. Less distractions, less noise. All spheres focus and align. Deep concentration. Creativity bubbles out and up and over. It finds its way into some exquisite expression. It comes out of us coiled like a baby snake, so beautiful and powerful.
Jupiter Retrograde in Gemini is also a question of identity. Think of Gemini as a mirror. What do you see? And how do you want to be seen? Who we are is changing day to day, moment to moment. We can harness this mutable power to make healthy, playful, necessary changes to our sense of identity. Many different kinds of relationships will also continue to be explored in the highly social world of Gemini. It’s been hard babies and it’s not going to get easier. Stay true to yourself. Communicate everything. Gemini lives in the throat chakra so honesty is definitely the best option.
If you haven’t started writing yet, do it today. Also meditation has never been more essential. I wish everyone the very best of luck in this whirlwind transit.
Dec 24: Jupiter square Saturn Retrograde in Pisces. We just saw this aspect on Aug 19 when Jupiter was direct, so this is round 2 in December. Jupiter-Saturn squares ask us to confront our personal conception of how capable we are. Saturn rules duty and responsibility. Opportunities will come our way but the question is: am I ready to take it on? Saturn’s influence (read: pressure!) indicates a period of major growth. It is an excellent time to take risks, start something new, and/or enter into a new career. We will exit this square feeling more mature and more prepared to handle the inherent difficulty of life. In other words: adulting! Big themes: work; purpose; place; structure.
