Every month the moon spins into the same constellation as the sun. This lunar-solar conjunction is what we call a new moon. This January the moon and sun rise silently together in the earthen kingdom of Capricorn. First moon phase of 2022!
In Capricorn the moon is in her “detriment,” opposite the sign she rules (Cancer). When the moon is in detriment, we tend to feel unusually drained or fatigued. The inclination to stay home, read books, and take a bath is perfectly natural.
New moons are new beginnings. Capricorn is not necessarily a warm, fuzzy position for the moon, but rather cold and reserved. However there are superpowers that come with this position, like being able to stay grounded and clearheaded in demanding situations.
The sea-goat is masterful at self-control and self-discipline. From Capricorn we learn to stay busy, keep working, and save our resources. The New Moon in Capricorn introduces practical, tangible ideas. Capricorn encourages us to be pragmatic and strategic. Channel this energy into your career and long-term goals.
Here we are, creaking forward inexorably, yearning for joy in a gray and dismal world. Though you may be tired, depressed, desperate for good news, do not forget that you are infinitely supported by the earth and she always loves to see you. Go outside, inhale her fog and ice. Visualize new sprouts popping, reaching for the sun. Connect to the earth element with this image of lightness.
Though this moon phase is ultimately about work and planning, it is nonetheless a quiet and meditative time. If you feel like resting, please rest. This is not a time to power through. It is, however, a good time to write, reflect, and organize.
There will be a grand total of four planets in Capricorn on the day of this new moon (Sun, Moon, Venus Retrograde, and Pluto). Though Venus Retrograde will bring a certain level of social awkwardness to the scene, it is a relief to know that the moon will form a supportive trine to Uranus Retrograde in Taurus. This brings levity, spontaneity, and unexpected positive outcomes.
Last year’s New Moon in Capricorn formed a close conjunction to Pluto. This brought drive, endurance, and ambition. It was the perfect time to begin again. I planned actively for the future, working on laptops side by side with my partner. That day he received a call about more work and I signed up for classes. I dreamed my way forward, imagining all the possibilities, planting seeds of intent in the cold ground.
