Every month the moon spins into the same constellation as the sun. This lunar-solar conjunction is what we call a new moon. This month the moon and sun rise dark and silent together in the earthen kingdom of Capricorn. This is the last moon phase of the Capricorn solar cycle. Jan 19 is the first day of Aquarius season.
New moons are new beginnings. It doesn’t matter that we’re trudging through the depths of winter – there’s never been a better time to dive into your journey.
In Capricorn the moon is in her “detriment,” opposite the sign she rules (Cancer). A planet is weakest in its detriment. Watch for unusually low energy. Your inclination to stay home is perfectly natural.
Those born with the moon in Capricorn experience emotional strain due to difficulty expressing their feelings. In other words, the moon is not warm or forthcoming in this position, but rather cold and reserved. However there are superpowers that come with this position too, like being able to stay grounded and clearheaded in demanding situations.
The sea-goat is masterful at self-control and self-discipline. From Capricorn we learn to stay busy, keep working, and save our resources. The New Moon in Capricorn introduces ideas of a practical, tangible nature. Capricorn encourages us to be more pragmatic and strategic. Focus this energy on your career and long-term goals, or the things which make up the secure foundation of your life.
Though this moon phase is ultimately about work and planning, it is nonetheless a quiet and meditative time. If you feel like resting, rest. This is not the time to push yourself. It is, however, a good time to write, reflect, and organize.
Here we are, creaking forward inexorably, yearning for joy in the endlessness of self-work. Go outside and inhale low gray clouds. Though you may be tired, even depressed, do not forget that you are infinitely supported by the earth and she would love to see you. Visualize new sprouts popping, reaching for the sun. Connect to the earth element with this image of lightness.
There will be a grand total of four planets in Capricorn on the day of this new moon (Sun, Moon, Venus, and Pluto). Great news: this new moon will form a close conjunction to Pluto. This brings a powerful scorpion energy to the next lunar cycle. Pluto imbues this moon phase with drive, endurance, and ambition. New moons are the perfect time to begin again.
Also worth mentioning is a square on the morning of the new moon between Mercury in Aquarius and Uranus Retrograde in Taurus. With Mercury in unpredictable Aquarius (and squaring Uranus, ruler of Aquarius!), things are bound to be a bit wonky. Your rhythm will likely be thrown off.
