Mercury: ruler of travel, communication, and the mind; poet, soothsayer, healer, lucky star, and underworld guide. With magical caduceus in hand, Mercury leads freshly discorporated souls from the lower to the upper worlds.
This is a very short transit, just two weeks, but it’s ok, that’s all we need. Mercury in Gemini is the antithesis of Mercury Retrograde: everything and everyone operates in hyper speed, all according to plan. Mercury rules Gemini (and Virgo), so he is “at home” for this cycle! This is one of my favorite transits. We are so lucky to experience quintessential mercurial essence each year. It’s time to create, communicate, network, write, sing, dance – whatever excites you intellectually or creatively. Gemini season is arguably the busiest time of the year.
Gemini is the zodiac’s witty wordsmith and gypsy musician. To the untrained eye, Gemini appears calm, cool, and collected, but a bundle of nervous energy vibrates just beneath the surface of his smooth exterior. Mercury’s tiny size and speed are perfectly reflected in the qualities of Gemini. Twins, according to archetype, are wiry, spritely, and always on the move. Twins represent duality in all forms: male and female, light and dark, day and night, life and death, sun and moon. In East Asia, this is yin and yang. Hunahpu and Xbalanque are the twins from the Popul Vuh, the creation story of the Mayan people. At the end of the Popul Vuh, the twins surface from deep within the earth, climb into the sky and become the sun and moon.
Despite his motormouth, Gemini is a private soul, cloaked in secrecy. Geminis openly admit that they can’t/won’t stay in any one relationship, job, or physical location for long. Infatuated with mystery, they become easily addicted to new people or ideas, and then, just as quickly, drop these obsessions with stupefying swiftness. Here we see the twins’ notorious aloofness. One twin wants to love and be loved; the other can’t wait to fly away and never come back. Gemini routinely leaves his comfort zone to slake an undying thirst for what is real and extreme and intoxicating, then returns to be rocked and lulled by a familiar revolution.
Mercury enters Gemini when the moon is in Capricorn – a very productive earth influence to kick off this bustling transit. On May 12, Mercury trines Saturn in Aquarius. This influence brings grounding and stability to our minds. Venus Retrograde in Gemini will begin later that same evening. This lasts until June 24.
Gemini Season officially begins on May 20! This is when the pace of life really picks up. On the New Moon in Gemini of May 22, Mercury meets up with Venus Retrograde for a conjunction. This influence is so positive and pleasant; a great day to socialize. You may be let out of school or work early. Small happy surprises are likely.
However! Happening that same day, Mercury also squares Neptune in Pisces. The last time this aspect occurred, my partner forgot to lock my car and someone came in the middle of the night – in the pouring rain! – and stole a bunch of shit from my car, including my beloved 14-year-old iPod. This is not a good day to leave things up to chance. We should give ourselves extra time to do everything. Treat this day as you would a mini Mercury Retrograde. The good news is that, due to Venus’ influence, it looks like everything is perfectly fine on the social front.
Mercury enters Cancer when the moon is in Leo. If you were born with Mercury in Gemini, these next two weeks are your Mercury Return. To find your personal Mercury sign, click here.
