The Waning Last Quarter Moon rises at midnight, peaks at dawn, and sets at noon all over the world, no matter your time zone. At this station, the obsidian moon in Scorpio squares the brilliant Aquarian sun. The moon will move to Sagittarius on Feb 5.
Last quarter moons are turning points. They clear the way for the new moon / new lunar cycle. This phase prepares us for the vivid New Moon in Aquarius (Chinese New Year) on Feb 11.
Scorpio and Aquarius belong to the fixed modality. To be fixed is to be strong, passionate, and full of conviction. Fixed energy in the skies means that it is time to fortify the spirit.
In the Greek myth of Scorpius, Orion the hunter threatened to kill every animal on Earth. This displeased Gaia, so she sent an enormous cosmic scorpion to attack Orion. Try though he might, Orion could not defeat the scorpion and his murderous plans were foiled. The reason that Scorpius and Orion lie at opposite ends of the sky is so that when one rises, the other descends below the horizon, effectively precluding further conflict.
Scorpio is the chrysalis weaver. Without Scorpio, we would never transform beyond anger. Scorpio says: look at your shit, acknowledge your shit, do your work, kill off the bad shit, and then, in the blackest black of deadest night, our wings begin to sprout. Scorpio is the hag, gurgling prophecies from the muddy root of the root of the root. She takes us in, no matter how we arrive, and gently rocks us to sleep. She kisses our scars with poison lips until everything falls away. She has seen everything, knows everything, loves everyone.
Deep, dark Scorpio takes us on a journey now, whispering in the night: do you remember the womb, the tomb? This is where I live. And so it is. Creature of infinite water, return with great haste from whence you came. Consumed by your own power, scatter to the stars and be reborn. At the edge of all edges, feel everything.
Where does Aquarius enter? The water bearer is a creature of great intellectual and creative ability, eager to explore every corner of the cosmos. He dares not distract us with pains from the past, but instead turns our head toward the sparkling future. Aquarius possesses extraordinary powers of manifestation. He is fearless enough to ask, why not?
At this phase last year (Feb 15), I felt exhausted and overwhelmed; the energetic load was just starting to get heavy enough to drain our vitality. This year the moon will oppose Mars in Taurus. Something big is coming: a move, a shift, a revelation. Nothing about this juncture is quiet or ordinary. And the destination? Uncertain at best. Drink plenty of water to honor Scorpio’s element. In meditation, focus on the solar plexus chakra. Unlock your power with Scorpio Yoga. To find your personal moon sign, click here.
