This full moon is the first of three supermoons in 2020, all happening one right after the other. The closest and largest one is next month in April. A supermoon can be a full moon or new moon, occurring when the moon is at perigee or within 90% of perigee (the point at which the moon is nearest to the earth in her monthly orbit). The March full moon is also called the Worm Moon because this is the time of year when earthworm castings begin to reappear in the soil. The moon will rise at sunset, peak at midnight and set at sunrise – and this is true all over the world, no matter your time zone.
Sun and moon oppose one another in starry-eyed Pisces and analytical Virgo. These archetypes narrate dreams vs. reality. Pisces flows, Virgo tightens. Pisces is hardly awake; she yearns for something else, something other than reality. Pisces abides so far away that when she is suddenly, forcibly confronted by what is, she would honestly rather die. The fishes live behind closed eyes. Too much of this energy makes us feel confused and deluded.
Pisces rules fantasy and intoxication; Virgo rules the rational, waking, judging mind. Pisces dissipates in clouds of denial and indecision; Virgo chokes in dizzying circles of anxiety. How to remain grounded and present while we sink below to visit the mermaid cove? It is so easy, especially with Neptune still in Pisces, to slip in and out of twilight nothingness. The Supermoon in Virgo shakes us by the shoulders as if to say: be aware! Keep your eyes open, head up! Do not ignore the outside world!
I am definitely feeling the tension between these two polarities as I begin the process of searching for a job (AAHHHHH). I have marked this full moon on my calendar as the day that I will officially begin applying to positions at schools. But you know what? I’m going to be fine. And so are you.
This full moon is not just about work, but also service, including service to ourselves in the form of exercise, proper diet, and general health and wellness. This supermoon brings bodily issues to our attention in a powerful way and encourages us not to ignore or neglect our health.
And so we keep turning inward, just like the sun below the horizon, flying through infinity. Psychic and physical energy increase significantly at the full moon. This is felt not just the day of, but for days before and after. Emotions and intuition will be heightened, just as women experience before menstruation. It is our duty to remain calm. Non-reaction is the root of all journeys made in the name of self-control and self-discipline.
Excellent news: this supermoon coincides with the last day of Mercury Retrograde! Yay! However, this full moon is going to oppose Neptune in Pisces (cozied up to the sun for a conjunction, exact the day before). The most important thing to remember is keep expectations realistic – don’t hop on the emotional rollercoaster.
Here we are beneath the full moon, one foot on earth and the other quickly turning translucent, pulled by an unseen force to the farthest star. In our toes the fishes swim in rings, urging us toward the ocean’s rocky depths. Sorry mermaids, you can’t leave the world just yet. You dream of fantastical suspension, of being mere vapor in the vacuum, but you must awaken. It is painful, I know, but stay here and together we will transform. In meditation, focus on the solar plexus chakra. Calm your nervous system with Virgo Yoga. To find your personal moon sign, click here.
