Planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a “backwards” functioning of the planetary roles. Saturn is the engineer and architect of the solar system. Saturnian energy is objective and resourceful. This planet is associated with institutions, finance, and infrastructure. Saturn moves slowly and deliberately, especially during the 4.5 months of the year that it is retrograde.
Saturn entered fiery Aries recently on May 24. Saturn’s return to Aries marks the beginning of another 27-year cycle. Aries is simple, direct, fueled by testosterone and adrenaline. The pace of life is faster now and much less calm. Only the first six weeks of this retrograde fall in Aries and the remaining three months take us back to the mystical oceans of Pisces. I will talk briefly about Saturn Retrograde in Aries before discussing what to expect for the rest of the retrograde.
The most important thing during Saturn Retrograde in Aries is the art of careful deliberation. We need focus, correct timing, and contemplation. Many new connections and career pathways will continue to present themselves but we must choose wisely. Aries is an impatient, impulsive archetype. During the slowness of the retrograde, we will cultivate even greater patience.
Aries embodies an entrepreneurial spirit in work and in life. With Saturn in Aries, we prefer to work for ourselves. However, being on our own produces uncertainty and insecurity. During the retrograde we can experience temporary loss of confidence.
Saturn Retrograde in Aries is also a much-needed pause on rage and violence. Conflict continues to arrive in the places in which we most desire stability and security: in our families, workplaces, governments, schools, and local communities. This is Saturn’s domain, after all. Questions of bodily rights and security have never been more important.
Saturn Retrograde in Aries will conduct an unflinching look at the divisions we face, all laced with anger. We will succeed during this transit if we find a way to love ourselves. We must build strength in our bodies and spirits rather than tearing others down.
Saturn Retrograde in Pisces follows, but it will not feel like it did before, so confusing and uncomfortable. It will feel instead like a perfectly warm pool lined with jeweled coral. This will be a cathartic three months in which we make sense of the last three years of life, if not the last 27, considering that Saturn in Pisces was the capstone to a 27-year cycle around the sun.
In the waters of Pisces, it is clear that we have so much experience now; we know what to do, how to cope. We will discover that we have learned to trust ourselves. This last round of Saturn Retrograde in Pisces takes us to new levels of self-love and acceptance. This is the closure that we have been waiting for so patiently since 2023.
So much of what we have experienced over the last three years didn’t make sense while it was happening. Parts of ourselves were changing and we couldn’t name how or why. The experience was so profoundly internal, colored by the most personal of lenses. But now we see ourselves coming out the other side, stronger than we ever could have imagined.
At the end of Pisces’ epic saga, two fish circle in mysterious waters. And though they circle, they hold inner peace. Shame dissolves into complete understanding. Forgiveness floods the world.
The next big event on the horizon is a conjunction with Saturn and Neptune at 0 degrees Aries in Feb 2026. Stay tuned for more details throughout the year!
