New Moon in Leo 🐱 Aug 16, 2023

This month’s New Moon falls in the constellation of the fiery lion. Leo speaks to our heart, identity, narrative, and sense of Self. It’s about how all of those things get wrapped up together. It’s about expression, creation, emotion, dance, art, music – all of the beautiful, exciting ways in which we reveal ourselves, in which we communicate to the world, this is who I am.
The message is clear at this new moon: you’ve got to love y o u r s e l f
& you’ve got to surround yourself with people who make you feel good, people who really LOVE you.
When creative expression is blocked, or reduced to a trickle, as we see in the archetype of the writer with notebooks full of empty pages, or the artist who wrings her hands in despair, pacing around her studio late morning, we know some aspect of Leo is blocked. A block on creativity is not to be taken lightly. Paradoxically it must also be treated with extreme care as the forlorn inner child – aka fractured ego – is always found tightly wound around the creative Self, cutting off its vital air supply.
New moons are new beginnings. At the New Moon in Leo, we’re doing a deep dive to the origins of our strongest emotional responses. But instead of adding layers of guilt and shame, instead of feeling like shit about ourselves and wildly pointing out all of our perceived flaws, we will turn towards the pain with love and understanding. That is the singular way to unlock the unicorn of creativity without scaring her away, deeper into the forest of Untold Pain.
The process of healing ourselves is so much more nuanced than what the internet and general new age culture lead us to believe. It is unique to who you are and it can be as private or public as you like. It’s not always a story of immediate progress, though this is hard to admit in a society obsessed with instant gratification.
In the spirit of being more real, I want to share a discovery I made last year at this new moon: all of the modalities I studied were ultimately useless until I understood the deeper work I needed to do. I can do yoga from dawn until dusk, for example, but it does nothing for me without these extra layers of added awareness about my family, my past, my roots and the way all of those things grew over my inner child until I was unable to see or know myself and therefore unable to cultivate any real love or understanding for myself.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t beat yourself up if the modalities are not helping, even modalities like astrology which we know are so wonderful and helpful. Only you know yourself completely and only you can unlock the pathways to healing. No blog or coach or crystal is ever going to do that for you.
So be kind, gentle, and patient with yourself. The journey of self-love begins quietly beneath the darkness of this invisible flaming moon. Do whatever you need to feel good and comfortable and natural.
Often Leo forces us to confront a powerful anger (or fear) within ourselves. When we become enraged and project everything onto others, this means we haven’t worked through something. And we do have to work through it!
real self-love ~ real self-care ~ pride ~ heart ~ warmth
Mixed news: this new moon coincides with a supportive trine between Mars in Virgo and Uranus in Taurus. Great social influence, fresh and fiery. Wonderful opportunity to relax and catch up with loved ones. Lean on your friends <3 …however! the moon herself forms a very sharp square to Uranus as well, which means that we need to expect the unexpected and for sure go with the floooooow
